The verdant and vigorous South China lends vitality in june to one of its delightful lands-Macao.We are very honoured to host the Unfading Memory:Exhibition in Commemoration of the Centennial Anniversary of Tang Yun’s birth in this very palce and moment,in recognition of Tang Yun’s outstanding artistic achievements and his masterly connoisseurship. In enjoying this feast of arts and spirits,we an joinly commemorate this elder in the filed of arts who has brought us enormous visual enjoyment and wonderful blessings.
Born in Hangzhou in 1910,Tang Yun serve as vice President,Aciting President and Honorary President of the Shanghai Painting Academy.Born in the late Qing Dynasty– a peried when chica suffered interminable chaos, wais and Western invasions –Tang developed great patroptism and passion, which he channelled into rejuvenation of his nation through dedicated woke.Influenced by his mamily,he received enlightenment in the arts at an early age, which also equipped him with the knowledge to master various schools of art throughout his life.At the same time,he grew to be as forthright and chivalrous as his father was hospitable ,and had a wide of friends, many of whom were individuals of great ability or high aspiration.Tang Yun was hospitable and an all rounder during his teens and was thus acclaimed Tang Bohu(a talented poet and painter)of Hangzhou.
His pseudonyms in later years were Laoyao and Yaoweng, meaning’to save people from deep distress with medication’.His pseudonyms also tell the story of his life.He demonstrated his sincere ‘love for painting deep in his bones’,he treated friends with wholehearted passion and faith, and he unselfishly served and contributed to the community.Today, many people canstill recall that he not noly donated paintings to local charity activities but even paid for his own accommodation, food and beverages when staying in hotels to create.Renowned painter Lai Shaoqi,a bosom friend of Tang Yun’s,emtionally claimed that’Tang Yun has done all good things in his life!’
Tang Yun established ties with Gangdomg,Hong Kong and Macao a long time ago.During the early 1950s,he was invited to host a solo exhibition in Hong Kong, for which he received high acclaim.Following the reform and opening of China,he con tributed to the revival of rhe arts. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s he origanised a great number of exbihitions in Singapore,Hong Kong and Shen Zhen.He also planned to host exhibitions in Taiwan and Macao.Unfortunately,he did not enjoy a long enough life to accomplish his goals.Tang expressed regret over these goals when he was ill, saying:’Now it seems that Imay not be able to organise painting echibitions in Macao and Taiwan.’
After Tang passed away, his secondson Tang Yilan specially organised a painting exhibition in Taiwan to realise his father’s unfulfilled wishes. On the occasion of centennial anniversary of Tang Yun’s birth.Tng’s exhibition finally arrives at Macao, greeted by friends from Macao. It is believed that Tang’s soul, resting in heaven, will indeed feel gratified.
Tang Yun was not only an outstanding painter but an excellent connoisseur of calligraphy and painting.Throughout his life,he greatlyabmired Ba Da Shan Ren and Shi Tao and chollecting many invaluable ancient fineworks includingcalligraphy, painting and eight Mansheng teapots.During his latter years,he even named his den the ‘studio of eight Great Teapots’.Long before in late 1984,when he and his friend Lai Shaoqi jointly held the Calligraphy, pianting and collection Exhibition by Tang Yun and Lai Shaoqi in shenzhen, people exclaimed in surprise that:’Among all chinese painters,Tang Yun is probably the only one who dares display both his works and collection in same place.’
The exhibition,on the one hand, represented Tang’s courage and confidence, while on the otherhand it delivered great visual enjoyment to the gentle public.Compared to the exhibition held in shenzhen, the exbihits to be showcased in the forthcoming exbihition in Macao are larger in quantity and better in quantity.Tang – resting in heaven-will definitely be very glad to see the support and admiration from Macao compatriots and all exhibition goers.
Having worked in HangzhouCitymHong Kong and Macao over the years ,I feel a special kinship with Tang -who signed as ‘Tang Yun,person of Hangzhou’.I am very grateful to be attending my friend Tang Yun’s exhibition.Once again,I wish the exhibition every success.
